What is a Lorem Ipsum Generator?

Lorem Ipsum generators produce placeholder text for design mockups, prototypes, and content layouts. Here's how they work and when to use one.

A short history of placeholder text

Lorem Ipsum is filler text derived from a 1st-century BC work by the Roman writer Cicero, De finibus bonorum et malorum. Typesetters started using it as dummy text in the 1500s because its word lengths and letter distribution roughly mimic real Latin and English prose — close enough that a layout looks "real," but meaningless enough that no one is distracted by the content.

A Lorem Ipsum generator is a tool that produces blocks of this filler text on demand, usually configurable by number of paragraphs, sentences, or words.

Why designers still use it

When you're laying out a page, the actual copy almost never exists yet. If you drop in real-looking sentences ("Welcome to our new homepage…"), three things go wrong:

  • Stakeholders read the copy instead of reviewing the design.
  • Word lengths don't match what production copy will look like.
  • You end up rewriting the layout once the real text arrives.

Lorem Ipsum sidesteps all of that. It gives the eye texture without semantic meaning.

When not to use Lorem Ipsum

  • In any text a user can actually see in production. Shipping with placeholder text is a classic embarrassment.
  • For accessibility testing. Screen readers will read it. Use real copy or clearly-marked placeholder strings.
  • When copy length is unknown. Sometimes you need to constrain the design to the real copy, not the other way around.
