Random 5-Letter Words for Word Games and Practice
How to use random common five-letter words for guessing games, Hangman, and spelling, plus how pattern search works and how to pick fair words.

The Random 5-Letter Word Generator gives you common English words that are exactly five letters long. There are 867 words in the list, and you can narrow them down with a letter pattern and a must-contain letter.
Five letters is the length most daily word puzzles use, including Wordle, and it is a good length for Hangman and spelling practice too: long enough to be interesting, short enough to guess. This guide covers how the list was built, how to use the filters, and a few games you can run with it.
What is (and is not) in the list
Search intent here is simple: people want words they would actually see in a game. So the list is built for that:
- Common words only. CRANE, PLANT, BRISK, and QUIET, not rare dictionary entries that nobody would guess.
- Exactly five letters, a to z. No hyphens, apostrophes, or accents. Every word was checked by script.
- No proper nouns. No names, places, or brands.
- No lazy plurals. Words like CATS or BOOKS (a four-letter word plus S) are left out, since popular word puzzles rarely use them. Words that just happen to end in S, like GLASS, BONUS, or OASIS, stay in.
- Nothing offensive. It is safe for a classroom.
- US spelling. COLOR, HUMOR, and FIBER, not COLOUR or FIBRE.
It is not the official answer list of any game, and it is not affiliated with one. Think of it as a curated practice list of everyday five-letter words.
How the filters work
Pattern
Type the letters you know, in position, with a ? for every unknown letter. You can also use an underscore or a period instead of ?.
| Pattern | Means | Example matches | |---|---|---| | ?R??E | R second, E last | CRANE, PRIZE, GRADE | | S???Y | starts with S, ends with Y | SALTY, SPICY, STORY | | ST | starts with ST (short patterns fill in the rest) | STAIR, STORM, STUCK | | ??A?? | A in the middle | BEACH, PLANT, SHARP |
A pattern shorter than five characters is treated as "starts with." A pattern longer than five gives you a message explaining the format.
Must contain
Pick a letter the word has to include somewhere. This is the filter to use when you know a letter is in the word but not where it goes. Combine it with a pattern for a tighter search: pattern ??A?? plus Must contain T gives you words like PLANT and TOAST.
If the two filters together leave nothing, you get a short message instead of an empty list. Remove a fixed letter or set Must contain back to Any.
Games to play with it
A homemade guess-the-word game
You do not need an app to play the five-letter guessing game. One player generates a single word and keeps it secret. The other player has six guesses, each a real five-letter word. After each guess, the word-keeper marks every letter:
- Green (or circle it): right letter, right spot.
- Yellow (or underline it): in the word, wrong spot.
- Gray (or cross it out): not in the word.
Paper and two colored pens are enough. Swap roles each round, and keep score by how many guesses each player needs.
Practice for daily puzzles
Generate 20 words and treat each as a hidden answer. Start every puzzle with the same opening guess and see how many guesses you need. Many players open with a word that uses several of the most common letters in English, such as E, A, R, T, L, and S. SLATE, CRANE, and STARE are popular choices for that reason.
The pattern box doubles as a checker while you play: if you know a word is ?R??E and contains A, type the pattern and pick A to see which common words still fit.
Hangman
Five-letter words make quick, fair Hangman rounds. Difficulty depends less on length than on the letters:
| Easier | Harder | |---|---| | Common letters (TRAIN, STONE) | Rare letters (JUMBO, QUIRK) | | No repeats (PLANT) | Repeated letters (FUZZY, PIZZA) | | Several vowels (AUDIO) | One vowel (CRISP, CHILD) |
For longer words and themed categories, the Hangman Word Generator has easy, medium, and hard settings.
Speed scramble
Generate ten words, scramble the letters of each by hand, and race to unscramble them. Or let the Random Word Scramble Generator do the scrambling for you.
Spelling and vocabulary practice
Five-letter words are a comfortable step up from three- and four-letter sight words. For a weekly spelling list, generate ten words, check that they suit your class, and generate again to swap out any you do not want. A few ideas:
- Letter of the week. Use Must contain to build a list around one letter, like every word with a K.
- Pattern hunt. Give students a pattern like ?OU?? and have them find as many words as they can before checking with the tool.
- Sentence challenge. Generate five words and write one sentence that uses all of them.
If you need words of other lengths, the Random Word by Length Generator covers 2 to 12 letters.
