Random 5-Letter Word Generator
Generates random common five-letter English words for word games, with an optional letter pattern like ?R??E and a must-contain letter filter
About this generator
This tool generates random five-letter English words that people actually know, such as CRANE, PLANT, GHOST, or BRISK, for word games, spelling practice, and puzzles. Set how many you want (1 to 50) and you get a shuffled list with no repeats in the batch. The list has 867 common words, each exactly five letters, with no proper nouns, no plurals made by adding S to a four-letter word, and nothing offensive. Two optional filters narrow it down: type a pattern such as ?R??E (? means any letter; a short pattern like ST means "starts with ST"), and pick a letter the word must contain. If nothing matches, the tool says so instead of returning an empty list.
How to use
- Leave the pattern blank for any word, or type known letters with ? for unknown ones (for example ?R??E).
- Optionally choose a letter the word must contain.
- Set how many words you want, from 1 to 50.
- Click Generate to get a shuffled list of words in capitals, with no repeats.
- If you see a "no words match" message, loosen the pattern or the letter filter.
Use Cases
- •Picking a secret word for a homemade guess-the-word game played on paper
- •Practicing guess-the-word puzzles by solving random words with a friend
- •Choosing fair, well-known words for Hangman
- •Spelling lists and vocabulary warm-ups at a consistent length
- •Finding words that fit a known pattern, like ?R??E, while you solve a puzzle
Tips
- →For a two-player guessing game, one person generates a single word and keeps it hidden while the other guesses.
- →Generate 20 words and use them as a practice set: try to solve each from a first guess you always start with.
- →Use the pattern box to check that a word you want to use for a puzzle has enough alternatives to stay fair.
- →For Hangman, words with repeated or uncommon letters (FUZZY, JUMBO, QUIRK) are harder than words with common ones.
- →Teachers can generate one list per week for spelling practice at a consistent length.
FAQ
are these real words
Yes. All 867 words are standard, common English words, checked so that each one is exactly five letters a to z. Rare dictionary words, abbreviations, and names were left out on purpose, because a word game is only fun when the other player could reasonably know the word. US spellings are used (COLOR, HUMOR, FIBER).
is this the Wordle answer list
No. This is an independent list of common five-letter words written for this site; it is not affiliated with Wordle or its official word list. It follows a similar idea, though: everyday words, no plurals made by adding S to a four-letter word, and no obscure entries, so it works well for practice and for making your own guessing games.
how do I find words that fit a pattern
Type the letters you know in their positions and a ? for each unknown letter. ?R??E finds words with R second and E last, such as CRANE or PRIZE. A pattern shorter than five characters is treated as "starts with," so ST gives you words starting with ST. Use Must contain for a letter you know is in the word but not where.
why did I get a "no words match" message
Your pattern and letter filter together ruled out every word in the list. Some letters are rare at the start of five-letter words (none of the common ones start with X here), so remove a fixed letter or set Must contain back to Any and try again.
