About this generator

This tool generates random boy names from a list of 342 real first names in use today. Choose a style, an optional first letter, and how many names you want (1 to 30). Each batch is shuffled, and no name appears twice in the same batch. Popular now has 98 names commonly given to baby boys in the US in recent years, such as Liam, Mateo, and Hudson. Classic has 80 names that have been steady for generations, like Michael and Peter. Vintage has 80 names that peaked about a century ago, like Walter and Clarence. Unique has 84 real names you rarely hear, like Caspian and Lorcan. Short draws the 75 names with four letters or fewer from every group, and Any uses the full list.

How to use

  1. Pick a style, or keep Any to use all the names.
  2. Choose a letter under Starts with if you want names with a certain initial.
  3. Enter how many names you want (1 to 30) and click Generate.
  4. Generate again for a new shuffle, and copy the names worth keeping.

Use Cases

  • •Naming a male character in a novel, game, or comic when the first idea feels flat
  • •Building a baby boy name shortlist that goes beyond the top ten
  • •Filling a roster of realistic names for a sports team sheet, role-play, or classroom activity
  • •Choosing a name for an action figure, a stuffed animal, or a new pet
  • •Looking for a boy name that starts with a family initial

Tips

  • →Match the style to the setting: a farmer in the 1930s reads as a Clarence or a Floyd, a kid in today's classroom as a Mason or an Ezra.
  • →For a baby, try the name with the last name and a middle name before you fall for it.
  • →Unique names stand out on a page, so use them for one character in a cast rather than everyone.
  • →If a last name ends in a vowel, a first name ending in a consonant often sounds cleaner, and the other way round.
  • →Generate with Short and Any to compare how the same initials sound in a one-syllable and a longer name.

FAQ

how does the random boy name generator pick names

It shuffles the names that match your style and letter settings and shows the number you asked for, with no repeats in a batch. Every name has the same chance of coming up. The full list holds 342 real first names, and each name belongs to one style group only.

are the popular boy names up to date

Popular now is a list of names commonly given to baby boys in the US in recent years. It is not a ranking, and the order of the top names changes from year to year. For official counts by year, see the baby name data the US Social Security Administration publishes at ssa.gov.

what is the difference between classic and vintage boy names

Classic names, such as John, David, and Thomas, have been used steadily for generations and never feel dated. Vintage names, such as Walter, Harold, and Otis, were common roughly a hundred years ago, then faded. Some of them, like Arthur and August, are coming back, which is why vintage is a popular style for babies today.

can I generate a full name for a character

This tool gives first names only. For a full name, pair a result with the Last Name Generator, or use the Random Person Name Generator, which builds first and last names together. If you need a nickname for the character, the Nickname Generator can help.
