Random Girl Name Generator
Generates random girl names from a pool of real first names, filtered by style (popular now, classic, vintage, unique, short) and first letter
About this generator
This tool generates random girl names from a hand-picked list of 350 real first names that people use today. Pick a style, optionally a first letter, and how many names you want (1 to 30), and you get a shuffled list with no repeats in the batch. The styles split the list into four groups: Popular now (97 names commonly given to baby girls in the US in recent years, such as Olivia, Luna, Aurora, and Ivy), Classic (81 names that have never really gone out of use, like Elizabeth and Claire), Vintage (85 names that were common about a hundred years ago, like Mabel and Edith), and Unique (87 real but uncommon names, like Marlowe and Saoirse). Short picks only names of four letters or fewer (74 of them) from every group. Any mixes all 350.
How to use
- Choose a style, or leave it on Any to draw from the whole list.
- Optionally pick a first letter in Starts with.
- Set how many names you want, from 1 to 30.
- Click Generate for a shuffled list with no repeats, and generate again for a fresh batch.
- Copy the names you like into your notes or shortlist.
Use Cases
- •Naming a female character in a story, screenplay, or tabletop game when you are stuck
- •Brainstorming baby girl names beyond the handful you already know
- •Filling in realistic first names for sample data, mockups, or classroom word problems
- •Picking a name for a doll, a pet, or a character in a kids' pretend game
- •Finding a name that starts with a particular letter, such as a family initial
Tips
- →Say a name out loud with the last name it will go with. Rhythm matters more than how it looks written down.
- →For a character, match the style to when she was born: Vintage for a grandmother, Popular now for a kid in a present-day story.
- →Check the initials. A first, middle, and last name that spell a word can be fun or awkward.
- →Use Short when the last name is long, and a longer first name when the last name is one syllable.
- →Generate several batches and keep a running shortlist rather than looking for the perfect name in one go.
FAQ
are these real girl names
Yes. Every one of the 350 names is a real given name in use today, mostly in the US and other English-speaking countries, with some names from Irish, French, Scandinavian, Spanish, and other traditions in the Unique group. There are no invented or fantasy names. For those, try a fantasy name generator instead.
what counts as a popular girl name here
Popular now means names commonly given to baby girls in the US in recent years. The list does not show exact ranks, which change every year. For official counts, the US Social Security Administration publishes baby name data each spring at ssa.gov. Some vintage names, such as Hazel and Violet, are popular again, but each name is filed under one style only.
can I get a girl name that starts with a certain letter
Yes. Choose a letter in the Starts with menu. It works with any style, so you can ask for vintage names starting with M or short names starting with A. A few letters, such as Q and Y, only have one or two names, so the list may come back shorter than the number you asked for.
does it include middle or last names
No, this tool gives first names only, which is what most people need when they are naming a character or brainstorming. Pair a result with the Middle Name Generator or the Last Name Generator, or use the Random Full Name Generator to get complete names at once.
